Hey Art What’s Good

Hey Art What’s Good does exactly what it says on the tin – the podcast / blog believes that art should be inclusive and not exclusive. Artwork and art institutions are inaccessible to the masses and they want to help change that. Art should be for all: classless, without preference of gender, sexuality or race.

Here in the North East of England there is some really exciting contemporary art going on, so that’s where HAWG have started their mission.

HAWG consist of a freelance artist, a filmmaker/photographer and a creative, using their own perspectives, interests and skills to reach out to those around them. They aim to inspire, both through their personal practices and through this project. Art should be more accessible and collectively we know it can be! As they rightly say –  ‘the job of those within the arts to encourage those on the outside to step on in.’

All are welcome here at Hey Art, What’s Good? There are no silly questions or wrong answers. Art is not about being right or wrong, Art is simply about engaging and seeing what’s good…

HAWG was founded and is currently ran by 4 people. Alice Smith, Rosie Stronach, Ellie Clark and Amy Smith. Alice and Rosie host the weekly episodes of the podcast whilst Ellie and Amy do make occasional appearances on the show. They also help behind the scenes. Prior to being hosts of the show, they had realised that they didn’t know or had any information on the local arts scene in Newcastle. However, in June 2018 the podcast was born after noticing the wide variety of artworks that were available during that summer.

Their aim was to make the podcast consumer friendly in that the podcast was more understandable to the listener and would not use a large variety of art terminologies. They also give a positive focus when critiquing various pieces of art. They believe that open and honest conversation should be encouraged in order for art to accessible as possible.
